Quick answer: Choose IOSH for short, practical safety training for managers and staff, NEBOSH for a recognised qualification if you are building a career in health and safety, and OSHA 10- or 30-hour outreach training if you work on US projects or for clients who follow US safety rules. Many professionals end up with more than one.

“Which safety course should I do?” is one of the questions our training team hears most. The honest answer is that it depends on who you are and what you need the course for. A site supervisor who needs to run safer shifts has different needs from a graduate who wants to become an HSE officer, and both differ from a contractor whose client demands US-style training cards.

Here is a plain comparison of NEBOSH, IOSH and OSHA training to help you decide.

IOSH: practical safety for people who manage work

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) designs courses for people whose main job is not safety but who are responsible for it. IOSH Managing Safely is the best known. It teaches managers and supervisors how to assess and control risks, investigate incidents and measure performance, using examples from real workplaces.

IOSH Working Safely is a one-day introduction for employees at any level. It is a good fit for induction programmes and for teams who have never had formal safety training.

Choose IOSH if you need practical, quick training that makes a visible difference on site within days.

NEBOSH: a qualification for a safety career

Job adverts widely request NEBOSH qualifications for HSE officers, advisors and managers across the GCC and beyond. The NEBOSH International General Certificate is the usual starting point. It covers how to manage health and safety and how to control workplace hazards, and learners complete an open-book examination and a practical risk assessment of a real workplace.

It takes more commitment than an IOSH course, with self-study alongside taught sessions. In return, it gives you a recognised qualification and a path towards higher levels, such as the NEBOSH International Diploma.

Choose NEBOSH if safety is, or will be, your profession.

OSHA outreach: training for US-standard projects

The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration runs the Outreach Training Program through authorised trainers. The 10-hour course is aimed at entry-level workers and the 30-hour course at supervisors and workers with safety responsibilities. Both are available for construction and general industry.

It is worth being clear about what OSHA outreach is: a programme of awareness training that results in a course card, not a professional certification. It is often required on US projects, US government work and by clients who follow US safety practices, including some operators and contractors in the Middle East.

Choose OSHA if your employer or client asks for it, or if you work on projects that follow US regulations.

Which one should you choose?

  • You manage a team and want safer operations quickly: IOSH Managing Safely.
  • You want to work as an HSE officer or advisor: NEBOSH International General Certificate.
  • Your client or project requires US safety training: OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour.
  • You are an HSE professional on international projects: NEBOSH, with OSHA 30-hour as a useful addition.
  • You need to train a whole workforce: IOSH Working Safely for everyone, IOSH Managing Safely for supervisors.

If your organisation is working towards a certified safety management system, these courses fit well alongside ISO 45001 certification. ISO is revising the standard itself; see our update on the ISO 45001 revision.

Key takeaways

  • IOSH: short, practical courses for managers and staff.
  • NEBOSH: the recognised qualification for a career in health and safety.
  • OSHA outreach: awareness training with a course card, often required on US-standard projects.
  • Many professionals combine NEBOSH with OSHA 30-hour.

Frequently asked questions

Is NEBOSH better than IOSH?

Neither is better; they serve different purposes. IOSH trains people who manage work safely, while NEBOSH qualifies people who advise on safety professionally.

Does an OSHA card expire?

OSHA outreach cards do not have a federal expiry date, but some employers, states and clients require refresher training every few years.

Can I study NEBOSH without prior safety experience?

Yes. The International General Certificate has no formal entry requirements, although good English reading and writing skills help with the assessments.

Can these courses be delivered at our site?

Yes. SRA runs in-house sessions for companies, scheduled around your shifts.
